"You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have."
Maya Angelou

“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
Michael Jordan

INTENT

At Atlantic Academy our goal is to encourage participation in PE in all of our students.

We aim to provide a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all students to succeed and excel in competitive sport, dance and other physically-demanding activities. Opportunities to compete in sport builds character and helps to embed values such as fairness and respect. Alongside this we also strive to ensure that students experience and master different roles in sport, such as coaching and leading.

Our intent is to develop students in order that they:

  • Appreciate the significance of exercising for a lifetime.
  • Learn the fundamental motor skills that will allow them to develop the physical capability for sports and general wellbeing
  • Increase their fitness levels during PE including muscular and cardiovascular endurance, strength and flexibility.
  • To be creative, cooperative and competitive and to work as part of a team as well as an individual
  • Manage anxiety, tension and stress through the use of exercise
  • Develop leadership skills, negotiation and communication skills
  • Be confident in their own physical capabilities and inspire them to lead an active and healthy life
  • To develop the concept of fair play, honest competition, good sportsmanship and how to handle both success and defeat.

Key Stage 1

PE at Key Stage 1 develops fundamental movement skills, and teaches students to become increasingly competent and confident when using both gross and fine motor skills. They will access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. Lessons will take place in our sports hall or dance studio where they will engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

Students will be taught to:

  • Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
  • Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
  • Perform dances using a range of movement patterns
  • Take part in outdoor team building activities both individually and within a team
  • Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
  • Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and coordination, and they will begin to apply these in a range of activities
  • Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
  • Perform dances using simple movement patterns.

Key Stage 2

Students will continue to apply and develop a broad range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement.

During Key Stage 2 lessons there is an increased focused on  communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. Students will also apply self assessment to their practice; developing an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities, trying new sports or developing those being taught as part of the curriculum.

Swimming and Water Safety

By the end of Key Stage 2 all students will participate in a swimming assessment and have access to swimming instruction to ensure that they can:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • Use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
  • Take part in outdoor team building activities both individually and within a team
  • Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

Key Stage 3

Students will build on and embed the physical development and skills learned in Key Stages 1 and 2, become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and apply them across different sports and physical activities.

Reflective thinking will be developed and students will learn what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work.

PE lessons will develop the confidence and interest to get students involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life. They will be taught the long-term health benefits of physical activity to inspire students to lead a physically active and healthy lifestyle.

Students will be taught to:

  • Use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby and tennis]
  • Develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports including athletics and gymnastics
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activities which present intellectual and physical challenges and be encouraged to work in a team, building on trust and developing skills to solve problems, either individually or as a group
  • Analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
  • Take part in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports clubs.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities, trying new sports or developing those being taught as part of the curriculum.
