At Atlantic Academy, our aim is to stimulate students’ imagination and creativity, to develop their knowledge and understanding of Drama techniques and skills and to provide a safe environment to explore sensitive issues, difficult emotions and gain an understanding of human behaviour and situations.  Our intent is to develop students to:


  • To provide a rigorous and varied curriculum that teaches skills and knowledge of theatre 
  • Develop an enthusiasm and appreciation for Drama and encourage their capacity to enjoy performances within society
  • To provide numerous opportunities to create, develop and evaluate
  • Stimulate the imagination and creativity of all students through devising and performing
  • Evaluate performances and develop critical analysis skills
  • Give students opportunities to explore, discuss and deal with difficult issues and to express their emotions in a supportive environment
  • Promote communication skills, teamwork, negotiation and leadership skills
  • Develop a greater understanding of human behaviour and empathy
  • Provide opportunities to develop public speaking
  • Be able to articulate and communicate ideas, opinions, and feelings about their own work and that of others



The drama curriculum will challenge and support students to achieve strong outcomes at Key Stage 4, whilst building a love for theatre and its power of transformation.  Drama is intrinsic in building the confidence and character of students in ways that manifest itself not only in the drama classroom but in life itself. 

Key Stage 1

National curriculum drama is one of the 12 strands of learning in the literacy curriculum. Drama at Key Stage 1 helps children think about the ‘who, why, where, and when’ elements of stories, events and everyday experiences. 


Role play is explored using Talk 4 Writing to orally rehearse their stories and act them out when appropriate.  Students will be introduced to a poem each half term, which they will recite by heart. In addition to this students will participate in a Christmas Nativity play and perform to an audience of peers and parents. 


Key Stage 2

Opportunities to learn drama techniques will be presented to students throughout Key Stage 2. In ‘Speaking and Listening’ children are expected to learn to ‘speak competently and creatively for different purposes and audiences,’ which can be tried out in the lines spoken by different characters in a play.

The emphasis remains on promoting communication skills and building confidence, achieved through working as a class reciting and performing a poem and participating in a show to parents; an Easter show for years three and four and a summer show for years five and six. 

Key Stage 3

Our Key Stage 3 curriculum aims to extend students’ devising, performing, and appraising skills to the stage where all students are in a position to decide to carry on with Drama to Key Stage 4 and beyond.   Teamwork, leadership, building confidence and critical thinking are all at the heart of drama at Key Stage three alongside studying plays and learning techniques.  Year 9 units of study are designed to prepare all students for the expectations at RSL level 2 performance and continue to develop skills for the future.

Year 9

  • Key skills, drama styles and techniques

  • Blue Remembered Hills by Dennis Potter

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, our current offer is the RSL Level 2 Certificate in Creative and Performing Arts.  The course includes the core unit, “Final Production” and an optional unit, we currently offer “Performing Text.”
