ATLANTIC STUDENTS SEND A HEARTFELT MESSAGE TO THEIR COMMUNITY AND THOSE IN POWER…

Students from Atlantic Academy, Portland, have come out for the Global Climate Strike today, to send a special Valentine’s Day message to their local community and those in power.

The protest was led by students from the Portland 4 The Planet – Youth Project. Group member and Year 9 student, Tia Dowley-Wills explains, “It’s never been more important to make our voices heard. The Heart on the Grass symbolises our united anger and sorrow over the climate crisis and our determination to help inspire the changes needed to resolve it.”

Tia is part of the Portland 4 The Planet – Youth Project, a collaboration between Island Community Action, Atlantic Academy and Portland 4 The Planet. The project launched in January and will focus on some of the Planet’s biggest environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, sustainable food production and plastic pollution, with the students taking part in wide range of conservation and volunteering activities. The aim of the project to empower and support young people to work together and independently in order to create their own campaign for change and lead the way on projects that will have a positive impact on both a local and global level.

Group member, Joe Pascoe, a Year 7 student at Atlantic, said “I love to go in the sea to paddleboard, kayak, surf and swim. Global warming is affecting the oceans, currents, sea levels and weather patterns, making sea creature’s lives more difficult. Plastic pollution is also a big problem and I want to be part of the solution.”

The project, which runs until July, will culminate in first Atlantic Academy Environmental Fair on Saturday, 11th July, featuring environmental films and activities, exhibitions, traditional games, refreshments and students selling eco-friendly products. The Fair’s highlight will be project students showcasing their final campaigns to the wider community and securing pledges of support to take their ideas forward.

Portland 4 The Planet is funded by the #iwill (Youth Social Action Programme) through the #dorsetcommunityfoundation .
