Secondary students at Atlantic Academy have started their training to become Mental
Health Peer Mentors. Working in partnership with the charity, ‘Dorset Mind’, and
Bournemouth University the training will equip the volunteer students with important skills
in supporting good mental health amongst their peers. The training is taking place
throughout this autumn term, through a series of workshops delivered by professionals
working in the field of mental health. The peer mentors will work on a referral basis once
their training is complete, and will form a first point of contact for all students at the
Academy. So far the workshops have covered ‘the role of the mentor’, ‘active listening’,
‘questioning’ and ‘empathy’, and those involved are really looking forward to beginning
their peer mentoring duties in January 2020.
