“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”
Nelson Mandela

INTENT

At Atlantic Academy, our aim is for all students to have the opportunity to learn a language as a form of liberation from insularity and to provide an opening to other cultures.  A high-quality languages education should foster students’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. We want our students to be able to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.  More importantly, we want students to have the opportunity of communicating for practical purposes and to learn new ways of thinking. Language teaching should provide them with the foundation for learning further languages, and should equip them to study and work in other countries.

Our intent is to:

  • foster the skills of the individual student to understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
  • give students the opportunity to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • enable students to write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
  • encourage students to develop a love of languages
