INTENT
The science curriculum at Atlantic Academy Portland is designed to equip students with the core knowledge required to become scientifically literate citizens who can actively engage with the world around them. We have created a curriculum narrative that uses the core knowledge to progress towards answering key questions to enable understanding of events and phenomena of relevance to our students at school and beyond.
Key Stage 1
At Key Stage 1, the Science curriculum will enable students to experience, observe and question the natural and man-made world around them. Students are encouraged to be curious and ask questions about material they’ve covered and the world around them.
Key Stage 2
At Key Stage 2, the Science curriculum will allow students to broaden and develop deeper thinking about the world around them and range of scientific ideas. This will be done by exploring, discussing, testing and developing ideas about everyday phenomena and relationships between living things and environments. Students will be encouraged to ask questions about content covered and the world around them as well as analyse relationships and interactions. Students will be exposed to more abstract ideas and will develop their critical thinking to help understand and predict how the world operates
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3 students cover a broad curriculum of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and the development of Working Scientifically skills. Literacy development is also a key focus, with students producing pieces of scientific writing to demonstrate knowledge and understanding. Students are continually assessed throughout the course, completing assessment tasks and written exams. Modules taught at Key Stage 3 are:
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4 all students follow the AQA Combined Science Trilogy course.
-
Students will achieve 2 GCSEs in Combined Science.
-
Students will sit a total of six written exams at the end of Year 11 covering the entire GCSE specification, which will account for 100% of their final grade.
-
Students will complete required practical tasks throughout the course which are assessed in the written exams.
The Science Team
The Science Department at Atlantic Academy is made up of enthusiastic teachers who are passionate about their subject. Students are encouraged to ask teachers about their degree subjects in order to promote careers in science.
