Key Stage Two Curriculum

Our Main aims in Key Stage Two is to ensure students are further developing their academic skills and have the ability to maintain attention in an independent focussed manner for a sustained period of time. 

By the end of the Key Stage Two, our aim is that our students are confident in the following areas;

  • Are able to read fluently, using inference and deduction to demonstrate understanding

  • Are able to write a variety of text types independently using varied sentence structures

  • Ask and answer questions using a wide and technical vocabulary

  • Secure a command of the four operations in mathematics and use these in problem solving contexts

  • Develop independence in both their learning and in their social interactions

Assessment

Throughout Key Stage Two students are continually assessed by their Teachers and supporting adults working within the school. Students will use not only complete written work in books but will also use resources such as mini whiteboards and RAG cards to produce responses to questions posed. In addition during whole class discussions, cold calling (random no hands up questioning) is used to target students to provide responses.
In addition to daily assessments students will complete a number of assessments through the year during PPE weeks. Outcomes are reported to parents in our termly data reports as well as communicated twice a year during parent teacher conferences. In addition to written assessments a teacher informed judgement is also used to assess what level a student is working at and to identify any support that needs to be offered.

 

Curriculum

As with all areas of our Primary phase curriculum, all of our learning in Key Stage Two is linked to a central topic, such as a Energy and Sustainability or ‘The Middle East’.  Our topic mapping has been specially designed to support the needs of the students at Atlantic.

During a ‘typical’ Academy day in Key Stage we will Start the day sharing our Daily Message Board - with celebration of student successes and general academy notices.  We will then start either a whole class reading session where we will study a text such as ‘Wonder’ or ‘Cosmic’ On alternate days we will complete a whole class Grammar, Punctuation or Spelling activity. Following this we continue our literacy theme with our literacy session - our writing is always centered around our class text and will cover a variety of genres. After break time we complete our Maths No Problem session which will see us using concrete resources (such as dienes or place value counters) to solve real life mathematical problems using a variety of strategies. Following Family dining and Lunch time play, the afternoon we will will complete a variety of lessons from our non core subjects (Geography, History, Art, PE, DT, RE). At least once a week we participate in a Science lesson sometimes these will take place in the Science Labs in school.

Curriculum Enrichment

Enhancing our curriculum with Trips and visits is an important focus at Atlantic Academy. In Year 5 and 6 we participate in a short residential trip to Carey Camp and Central London.. In addition we enjoy visits from a number of community representatives and visits a number of local landmarks in the Portland area.

Communication with parents

We know that by working in Partnership with parents and carers will ensure the students at our school have the very best start to their educational career.

We ensure all staff are available every morning at drop off and pick up so we can share any events or activity. We report students progress 3 times a year with a data report demonstrating progress and twice a year we hold a consultation meeting discussing your child's progress and next steps.

During our celebration weeks, 3 times a year there will be events to come in and celebrate your child’s learning for example to join our Family dining and to enjoy a performance or poetry in our theatre.
